it is unbeevable to look at. there's a massive hole. [ phone ringing ] >> where is the fire? >> i'm on the 106th floor of the world trade ceer. >> the plane went in on one side and came out the other this is horrible. >> right now let's hand it over to john scott. you can see the smoke tower isow growing. there is quite a bit of flame inside the building. i wasust walking into the studio that day i wear this wireless ifb we call it. i heard this very urgent voice say john scott, studio b, now!
9:07pm
it was a minute or two later we the pictures5 u from the fox 5 helicopter. what could you say? the two towers are home at lost during the day to upwards of 50,000 workers. >> it looked like thelane was aiming towards the building. >> i was onhe 67th floor when the first plane hit. it took me a second or two to catch my breath.ki >> i'm walking going towards the parking lots. all of a sudden, the whole floor the whole building just rocked. it just rocked and threw you and just threw you, you didn't know what happened. >> at 8:46 boom, there's this loud explosion, noise somewhere, didn't know where. all i saw, rightp against the glass was fire, flame,
9:08pm
just a building fireball. >> i'm looking at something that is steel and all of a dden it isripped like it is paper because of whatever just passed through there. eathen this big heat comes blowing through the corridor that i'm in. then there's silence. >> for no apparent reason i started looking over the hudson. and i see fireballs falling down from the sky. i don't know what is going on. > these are coming to you live now, debris raining down from 110 floors. as you can see in is a clear blue sky day in manhattan. if this was an accident it would be a needle in a haystack kind of accident.w
9:09pm
>> i was in new york in my office like everyone else and most other people i thought my god how could thiserappen? never suspected the magnitude of what as facing us. >> i wasin my office with my speechwriter and secretary called to say that a plane had hit the trade center. rd on the televisionhe and sat tre wondering how can an airplane hit the world trade center it is a clear y, no wehe problems, how do you account forg9ae├▒vz >> normal tuesday morning i was standing at my desk getting ready for my staff meeting with my senior people. my executive assistant walked in and said a plane hit the world trade center. immediately my mind went to a twin engine of some kind. i said that's a terrible accident. >> i got a page telling met beingtrade center was
9:10pm
hit by a plane. karl rove got to the president and told the president a plane has hit the world trade center. the president went into a holding room. >> i called the president and said mr. president a plane he as hit world trade center. he said that's a strange accident.ha i said that i would call him back when we had more information. >> first moments, i called mayor giuliani right away and got him. right after i got off the phone with him, i called the president he was florida i was able to get him out of the conference and urge him to shutdown the air space over new york. >> the walk down was very calm. people in the staircase were well behaved, they were calm. occasionally somebody would become anxious. but somebody else would put their arm around them and say it is okay, we are doing fine. we got around the mid 20s, we began to see firemenrs walking
9:11pm
up the stairs. for the people walking down the sight of the firemen was a very calming experience. when i into the lobby, to see the damage there the full impact is beginning to dawn. >> now you hear silence. it is a dead calm of dust and smoke and all of a sudden, you hear people slowly, somebody starts screaming. someone starts yelling. someone stars saying, you hearing help. you are hearing plays. one at a time. -- you are hearing pleas one at a time. everybody coming out what happened, what happened? >> one of the volunteer fire marshals, grabbed my flashlight put a whistle ran out ofk and my private office into the larger office and said come on everybody let's go there's been an explosion upstairs we have to move. >> elevator came, we went downstairs.
9:12pm
rwe are on thehr ground floor about to get through the turnstile. the security guard asked us where are you going? i said i saw fireballs comie, wee. are getting out of herto no go back to your office. your bidding is secured. it is safe. >> there was an announcement, strobe lights flashed normally. siren whooped a little. there was this clear announcement, about building two is secure. that took a little pressure off. i went for a walk to the east floor. which ishere our trading floor is and walked up to the north wall. there were a lot of our people against the glass looking up to their left. you could see the north tower. very sadly at that moment what they were looking at was people jumping. >> it was all smoke and fire. you couldn't see the exit. you couldn't see the exit getting into towerone. couldn't get ba into tower one. i'm saying let's go looks like a clear shot home. whoever can make it, let's go.
9:13pm
>> i had two messages left on my answering machine. one just saying, stace it is me, pick up, because we screened our calls all the me that was 8:49. another message at 8:54. it was him again letting me know i was going to be hearing on the news that the other tower had been hit.
9:14pm
>> he was eye level with ter one and watching people jump to their deaths. there's some pain and suffering. >> just stepped off the elevator on 78, two steps and the plane hit. had no idea what it was. a lot of walls disintegrated. the elevator doors blew out and flames shot out. so, a few minutes after this obhappened, it was obvious that this was something a lot worse than what i originally thought it was. >> i worked my way over to what i guess was the main exit stairwell. prbably in the middle of the builng. somewhere in the middle of the
9:15pm
tower. started going down, 78 floors. we heard another noise and the building shook again. nots much as the first time. that had to be the second plane hitting the other tower. somewhere in the 30s, 40s, first firemen and policemen started coming up. i finally made it down to the ground floor. we came out right in front of the plaza the area betwee two towers where the fountain is. that was horrible that was a war scene. there were fires, deis flowing from both towers. i saw dead bodies out there. in front of the window, in front of me there was a body rastpped to an airplane seat. >> there was another one. we just saw another one. we just saw another one apparently go -- another plane just flew into the second tower. this raises -- this has to be
9:16pm
deliberate folks. we just saw on live televion, as a second f plane flew into the second tower of the world trade center. now, given what has been going on around the wor, some of the key suspects come to mine, osambin laden. >> my first instinct was, what is going on? how many planes are there? where are they coming from? who are they? and who do i call for air suppor i'm the police commissione and i have 41,000 uniformed members, 55,000 people work for me. and we are prepared for anything you could imagine. this was something you couldn't imagine. >> walked back down the hallway to my desk and the phone is ringing again. this time it is a young lady from chicago one of our rep offices. are you okay? i'm fine.
9:17pm
for no apparent reason in mid sentence, just happened to raise my head watchinged statue of liberty. what i'm seeing is a big gianta aircraft grey red letter on the wing and tail comng straight eye contact, eye level towards me the next thing i knew, i dove under my desk, huddled in a fetal s position, screamingra crying d the plane c rashed in the building. the plane from coming straight towards me bottom wing is wedged in my office door 20 feet from where i was under the desk. >> i -- elevator cables snapped. when you hear a 10,000 pound, 20,000, 40,000 pound elevator coming down a shaft and hearing people screaming you don't hear them screaming, you know they just died. whatever was over there just died, just silence.
9:18pm
>> at 9:03 or whatever time it was when the second plane hit, went boom, boom, there was a double explosion. i learned later it was the plane hitting the building a then closing. for the next 10 seconds, i was terrified. >> impact was so great and the sound that it made was so loud, that i got temporarily deaf. anything. hear it looked like a demolition crew came in and knocked verything over. >> building just continued to move. left, left, left toward e hudson river. a long, long way. it felt like yards. whether it was or not, i don't know the sensation was we are going too far we are going to fall over. i knew in an instant it was terrorism. the room fell apart on that second explosion.
9:19pm
>> walls tore in jagged angles. some door frames fell out o the walls. it was a mess. as if somebody ripped open a concrete sack and waved it in the air, yellow, white dust everyere. >> i'm crying saying lord i don't want to die here. i have two little children. please lord save me. send somebody, anybody to help me >> the building swayed forever one way then it came back to vertical many i snapped out of it and sobered up. turned on my flashlight.ere >> as we were in the classroom i a second page telling me the second tower had been hit. right waywa, i knew it was terrorism. shortly after i that page andy card walked in and was in the president's right -- afternoon whispered in the president's right here america is under attack. i wrote on the back of a yellow legal pad.
9:20pm
donay anything yet. and i held it up for the president to see. wendell is at white house, make that sarasota, traveling with the president, wendell what is the reaction from the president? >> reporter: the president is promoting a reading initiative on second day of a two-day trip to florida. he just finished reading to children at the elementaryho school and was asked about the incident. he said he was aware of it and th he would have something to say about it later.
9:21pm
it is beyond belief both towers of the world trade center are burning. both have apparently been hit by aircraft. >> my first reaction was to get to the scene as fast as i could. as i was driving down, emergency vehicles were going obviously flying down to the scene. i jumped behind a police car and dfted it all the way down and pretty much got two blocks from the scene. >> very first thing was we got close to the tower and was shooting it, but it was so h tall that i had u to keep backing up to get a better shot. >> when i got the first tight shots i realized what was happening at the top of the towers. >> i look up and people start shouting, "they're jumping!" i look up just in time to see
9:22pm
someone leap from what must have been the 108th floor. >> it is ridiculous, people are jumping. >> they must have felt like they had no other choice that decision that they made remains for met most horrifying part of the whole tragedy. >> realized there were jumpers and people lining up in the window wells. and i shot the first twoi that i saw. and then turned off my camera, because i was overcome with emotion. >> you are conscious of what is happening. but it is sort of looking through the viewfinder is sort of an insewell lay for. it is black and white. -- insulator. it is black and white, it is t color. oni think they knew early
9:23pm
they weren't going to be able to put the fire out they wanted to get rescuers up there as quickly as possible, as high as possible. not concerned about the fire at that point. >> i heard a banging and a voice screaming for help, help, help i'm buried, anybody there? i can't breathe, help! >> this is tan from the loans department please don't leave know die, somebody help me. >> a stranger's voice kept directing us come over here. >> even though he was responding, i couldn't hear. so i tried get up from under the desk and iup realized i he was covered up to my shoulder in debris.and i could peek throe rubble and i saw the bottom wing starts bur my greatest fear was this plane was going to ignite, the fuel tank is going to explode i was gonna die. so i crawled the entire len of the loans -- entire enter of the loans damage through the lounge into the computer room
9:24pm
into the communications room and ico go further there was a sheetrock wall blocking. he said jump over and i'm going to grab you. and i got up from that prayer and i started punching, kicking, hard as i can until a little hole appeared in the sheetrock. and he said i see your hand. i said just yank me through. and i jumped and i grabbed and i stuck my head >> and reached in, nothing happened. i said you must do this. up he went agn and i reached in and somehow grabbed on to something and i lifted him up and over this barrier and we a heap over the floor. >> this man just gave me a head lck with all his might he pulled and yanked me right through that wall. it was like a superman. he just yanked me through and i fell on top of him. and i give him a big hug and kiss and i said you are my guardian angel. my lord sent you to save me
9:25pm
we started down the stairs. the inner wall of the fire stairs had blown in. we could look through the cracks and you could e flames licking out the other side of the wall as we went down thrgh this area. >> we stopped at a floor because i couldn't breathe properly. i couldn't walk, i was cut, bloodied, bruised and the leg wound was opening. >> we went as low as the 44th floor, i know like an empty hotel lobby until a security guard manning his booth looked at us wide eyed and quickly said have you a phone? i will stay with this man if you get me help. >> the man was lying, his back was broken, covered with blood. please tell my wife and baby i love them. sendomebody for me the security guard stood like a hawk guarding that man. that man sacrificed his lifeguarding this man. while we were going down, no ems worker came up.
9:26pm
>> stanley called his wife and missed her but left messages he was fine. i called 91, after some difficulty it took three, four minutes to get the message across there was somebody down on the 44th floor. i know they were overwhelmed that day. stanley and i went all the way down to the plaza level without seeing a sole, nobody. on the plaza level we starred in awe where the fountain is normally flowing and people coming and going. we know nothing about hijacked planes. of the t pentagon, none of this. we are ignorant of all these facts. >> we got to the ground floor. only cops and firefighters and ems workers were there. debris was falling down it looked like confetti in a parade. and they were telling us to run. just go, run, run. they stayed back. sacrificing themselves so that brian and i could live.
9:27pm
>> president bush is about to speak. he's int florida at what was supposed to be a stkwroeu event at an elementary school. >> ladies and gentlemen this is a difficult moment for america. i unfortunately will be going back to washington after my remarks. secretary page and lt. governor willdi take the podium and discuss education. i want to thank the folks here at the booker elementary school for their hospitality. today we've had a national tragedy. two airplanes have crashed into the world trade center in an patient terrorist attack on our country. i have spoken to the

9:29pm
>> actually flipping through the radio, talking about how washington, d.c. is on high alert status because they think that might be the next>> target. >> i walked into the bidding, a group of people were sitting around the television ready for our meetings. >> after the rush hour would normally have ended i ended up getting stuck in rush hour-like traffic. americanall that airline 77 was a potential hijacked aircraft. >> as we sat down to have the meetingth for this client, one of the people said, well won't be here because she is on a plane to california. >> the plane took off at 8:10 when it was scheduled. if i had been at my office at the department of justice, one of the gals came in and sidebar bra is on the phone. i was at first relieved to hear barbara on the telephone becauseanic strikes
9:30pm
immediately. the next words out of her mouth were ted, my plane has been hijacked. >> we are watching all these aircraft in the system and trying to determine where they are.
9:31pm
>> the pilot announced the plane had been hijacked. she saidit had been hijacked shortly after takeoff. the plane had been in the air over anour. she implied they had been circling for a while. she and the other passengers had been herded to the back of the plane. i asked her whether the hijacke knew she was calling. she said no, they don't know. she indicated they used knives and box cutters to take over th pe plane. at some point we cut off. i immediately call the command center of the department of justice to let them know that my wife was on a plane that had been hijacked. >> i ke driving, i notice a plane coming in really fast and really low. i notice that it is american airlines jetliner and obviously a passenger plane. a pretty bigne. >> i told her in the first conversation thathe two hijacked planes hit the world trade center.
9:32pm
her instinct is what shall i tell the pilot? what can i do? i asked her where she he was. she tried telme and what direction. >> flight 77 made a left turn heading back after it was hijacked. they came back over washington, fairly high. then he did a left descending turn which gave him good visual visibility of the pentagon. >> i heard it before i saw it. a i looked up and directly in front of my field of vision, parallel to the ground, i saw a jet airplane with the silver paint job with the red,ue white and blue stripes under the windows, it was clearly an american airlines passeng jet come roaring by. >> we did nhenow where that aircraft was. moments later, that aircraft hit the pentagon. c ofourse our aircraft heads
9:33pm
towards washington, d.c. are well south of there. at that time they were not yet over washington, d.c.. >> it didn't veer from its course at all. i was like a missile into the side of the pentagon. >> then a huge fireball comes up in the air. there's all kinds of smokehe coming out. i could feel the impact that the explosion, the ground shook. even though my windows in the car i could feel the heat. >> john, we are hearing right now of another explosion has taken place at theve pentagon. we have the heart of the financial district of america being attacked. now we understand that there is an explosion, there has been an explosion in the pentagon. >> i began to hear reports of the explosion at the pentagon. i knew in my heart that was that aircraft.
9:34pm
>> it w instantaneous, just a very loud noise. lights went out. everything is black. very heavy soke debris piled on top of me. i'm pinned in my chair at my desk. >> as i camento focus closer pile of debris looked like a face. sure it couldn'te alive person. i thought i saw it wink or blink. i yelled for help. from outside came lt. commander taranitno. >> it feels like a furnace. i saw captain thomas tryi to llpu some debris. i looked off to my side and i saw mr. hinson 10 feet away. inside this cave of debris. already my uniform is starting to melt. my shoes are starting to melt. i'm really eager for him to
9:35pm
get out of there. he says he can budge. out of desperation i laid on my back underneath him and put my feet on the debris over his head and i leg pressed as hard as i could. >> me bushing pushing with my back and him pushing up with his legs he managed to get the we brie -- debris up far enough to the rubble. >> i think the total thing took 30 minutes. i didn't think i had very much time left when the rescue team came in. >> everybody was still up in there.ou we couldn't get everybody out. >> the general didn't make it there were five of news the section that survived. >> d.c. fire units going to plan e. emergency plan which quires all off-duty personnel to report back to their duty
9:36pm

9:37pm
washington, d.c. and watching united 93 now start very gradually top take up a flight path right towards washington, d.c. and we were very concerned about that. . >> as it started moving towards washington we had if-16's over washington, d.c., -- f-16's over washington, d.c. i was energized to move towards that aircraft, wiser to keep the f-16's over washington, d.c. in case another aircraft was coming in that we didn't see yet. >> sir we have to leave now.
9:38pm
no chancegoer bait. sort of propelled me out of office into the underground. and we got down to a place, a tunnel that is protected. when i got into the tunnel, we saw the pentagon had been hit that was on televion. i called the president again, he was headed for thein airport in florida. and urged him not to return to washington. because washington was now under attack. >> flight 93 was the only aircraft we could see on our radar at that time. it was eier sightly before or right around the time that thein american airle 77 had hit the pentagon. we could see this aircraft flying around up in the ohio and pennsylvania area. >> united alines called and told me todd made a call to an operator he initially called to report a hijacking. he felt at that time this was a normal sort of situation where the hijackers were going
9:39pm
to return them to the airport and there was going to be some demand made. >> i heard mark's voice say i'm on a flight from newark to san francisco three guysave taken over the plane and say they have a bomb. i'm calling you from the air onphe. and then there was a long pause. mom you believe me, don't you? i said yes. who are these guys? there was another long pause. then mark's voice came back and he said do you believe me, mom? i said yes. who a those guys? then we were disconnected. >> mom in is your mom the news is it is hijackedy terrorists they are planning to use the plane as a target to hit some site on the ground go ahead and do everything you can toem overpower them because they are hell bent. try call me back, if you have -- if you can. >> he told me he was on a
9:40pm
plane that had been hijacked. hea gve me a few details of what was going on and told me to call the authorities and hung up. >> i said do you know is flying the plane?' no, we've all been hearded to the back. >> two in the front of the plane had been hurt. they pulled the customer continue first css so he couldn't see what was going on. on the second call i told him that the world trade center had been hit and other planes had been hijacked. he paused and told the people sitting around him. he was alarmed. then he said, my god, it is a suicide mission.la >> the plane started to dip as they changed their course back to wasngton. >> in the third phone call i ld hbo aut the pentagon. he told me at that point he was putting a plan together to take back the airplane. and i asked who was helping him? he said there's a group of us. >> we are back here getting hot water togetherow to throw on them. do you have any other ideas? >> they were going to rush themb
9:41pm
hijacker with the bomb and attempt to get into the cockpit. he said it is what we have to do. and it wasn't long after that, tha she heard him say, i haved some men around him. said are you ready? >> we are all running to first class, i've got to go, bye. >> then he said let's roll! >> wknow that the passengers made a rush on the cockpit and thwarted the hijackers. we know that because the cockpit voice recording they knew there was a movement afo in theback and their moments were numbered upeo front. someone heard on the cockpit voice recording, they are coming, they are coming! there was a trendous thrashing around of dishes and carts back and forth. >> this plane was at lost 30 degrees, rapidly go to 45 degrees the other way and
9:42pm
rocking back anding for. i guess there was a fight going on and the aplane was rolng from right to left to right left. >> we heard blood screams. i don't believe it was the passengers screaming. >> they were rolling violently, back anding for. >> hijackersni were panicked, talking with each other. do you want me to end it now? i belie that was their signal we are going to crash now because we are about to lose control of this airplane. >> i am absolutely convinced thatav fourth plane would have hit the capital but for those heroes in pennsylvania. >> authorities at the somerset county airport confirm a large
9:43pm
plane crash 80 miles southeast of pittsburgh. you've got to assume it is related to all of these goings on. >> i told brian, i said this is the lord's doing. and i'm going to trinity church. and he said look i'm coming with you. together we grabbed each other's hand and started to run. surprising enough, not even one piece of confetti or broken glass touched us. th next thing i know we a priest.o >> that's where stanley broke down and looked at me and said this man saved my life. and i said to stanley, maybe you saved my life too. he said, you know i think that tower could go down. i said there's no way. i said that's a stl structure. and i didn't finish the sentence. >> we started to run. and we a strange sound, like steel bending and creeking. and the building started to
9:44pm
implode. it came down like a pancake effect. >> within a minute or two after he got the camera hooked up we set up to start reporting in the street, that's when the first tower fell. >> we heard the rumbling but it wasn't as loud as i expected it to be. >> oh my god look dude, point that way! oh my god! as i was about as i was going up the stairwell on t church street side the building started shaking up and down aouple feet in either direction. firemen at the top said "hit the deck."
9:45pm
>> we are on church street not sure what happened. there's been a huge explosion. everyone is running for their lives, literally police, media, i see a woman pushing a baby carriage here comes the smoke. >> i can't see anything cause of the dust, the lights were out. >> after the south tower fell that was the first time the panic set in. because realizing the south tower wase hit second and fell first, now you really have to worry about getting people out as quickly as possible. >> i pushed up and out and realiz ed i was still alive. i didn't know if i was alive or not. >> it is gone the whole tower! hopefully crap! they knocked the whole friggin
9:46pm
thing down! >> here comes the smoke. it is unclear what happened. the tower collapsed or. what i think we better get out of this mess dude. i think we better get out of this. >> we jumped in the truck with the camera and left an inch or two crack in the door with the cable inside the truck. >> oh my god! [ bleep ] are you all right? >> we were in the dark literally. it was fright . it was a frightening moment t have to ha no connection to the outside world and have noid idea what was going to happen next. >> we shouldn't be here, should we? >> everybody else [ bleep ] ran, cops, everybody. >> i don't know what to do.
9:47pm
